We continue to receive countless articles about how the Metaverse, an interconnected collection of immersive 3D virtual worlds, will revolutionize the way we live and spend time. Creators, brands and publishers need to expand their reach by buying land quickly, preparing for it in a “if you build it, they will come” spirit.
The fact that the users of these open worlds are still few and far between, and closed systems that show growth in user numbers (e.g. Roblox, Minecraft) are built around games, may limit their potential as places where people want to hang out. € In addition, the objectively poor aesthetics of these worlds will keep any respectable creator from actively participating.
A common misconception is that Web3′s main innovation lies in 3D immersive worlds, but this dubious improvement in the web’s user interface is only a small part of Web3′s promise. Web3 introduces the fundamental concept of digital ownership and verification, which can greatly impact how people interact online.
In Bowling Alone, Robert Putnam uses bowling as an example of the breakdown of American communities. As the number of bowlers has increased over the past 20 years, the number of bowlers in the league has decreased. When people play alone, they do not participate in the social interactions and civic discussions that can occur in a league setting. Putnam has been researching the decline in social capital in the US since the 1950s. He describes the decline of all forms of personal social interaction that Americans used to build, educate, and enrich their social lives.

Technology has accelerated these changes as people spend more time in front of screens than bowling. However, online communities are starting to form through chat systems such as IRC. A big shift came with the advent of social media, where groups of people with the same interests began to connect with each other and follow their favorite artists, sports teams or fashion brands. Functionality here is limited to what the Platform allows you to do within your walled garden, and unique identifiers associated with individuals remain the property of the Platform. Therefore, any hope of integrating external experience is determined by the platform.
The basic concept of having a digital token whose ownership can be publicly verified could reimagine how we interact online, shifting power from centralized platforms back to groups and individuals.
With this technology, communities can be tokenized, which means community members can issue digital assets in the form of non-fungible tokens (NFTs), whose ownership can be verified by almost anyone, making user databases publicly available.
So, how can creators, brands, and existing communities solidify their Web3 presence and regain control of their own destiny? I describe four methods below.
The NFTs representing these community access tokens are identified by the blockchain by their contract address and token ID. People identify them using visual representations in the form of works in various media – images, text, video, audio – as well as generated PFP elements. The PFP model allows unique tokens to represent unique people and has become the main form of a community token.
Once these tokens are distributed, the token holders create a community or universe. They can be granted access with tokens to any chat platform (eg Discord) to participate in chats or to participate in offers made by the community (eg Snapshot). It can be an interaction in an immersive three-dimensional world – the “metaverse”. The key here is that they are not tied to any of these platforms for long; their tokens allow them to move freely to any platform that wants to prove their ownership. We hope that over time many of these token-enabled platforms will emerge and these nascent communities will look for places to participate.
Use case: Sports club fans who jointly own tokens can visit Discord and discuss the latest games.
Benefits can be provided to the community through the same token gate as the community. Access to IRL (real life) experiences, livestreams or private commerce are examples of such experiences that will help add value to the participating community and the token itself.
Once these communities are established, they can begin to offer benefits to members of external communities in a “multi-user mode”. This is thanks to the blockchain, which makes it possible to verify ownership of the token.
A multiverse is a space in which different universes interact in a fluid manner, independent of any centralized platform. This fundamental shift of power from platform to participant is an exciting new development in the evolution of the Internet community.
