James Cameron told ComicBook.com in a recent video interview that when it comes to motion capture and emotion creation from VFX, Marvel villains Thanos and the Na’vi are on par. Both the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Cameron’s Avatar franchise use extensive motion capture technology to enable real-world actors to play otherworldly creatures. Josh Brolin played Thanos, and Avatar turned Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana into blue-skinned aliens.
When Cameron was asked by reporter Brandon Davis if his visual effects breakthroughs in the Marvel and comics universes were pushing him to raise the bar, the director replied, “Obviously the big comic book movies have spurred a huge volume of movies in the industry.” …the growth of technology brings everyone together. It gives you better artists, more tools, plugins and code [to use]. You have more talented people writing code.”
“Our team at WETA Digital is constantly growing with new employees,” continues Cameron. “So it improves everything. However, what is called WETA Effects is the best right now. Right? Industrial Light & Magic does a good job, but when it comes to facial expressions we do… Thanos? on . Give me a break. You have seen ['Avatar: Path of Water']. It wasn’t even close. That’s what WETA does.”
Cameron has been so critical of Marvel films that he stated in an interview with ComicBook.com, “I just want to be honest and have no intention of belittling Marvel or the DC Universe.” . In an October interview with The New York Times, the director came to light when he said he wanted to bring to Avatar: The Way of the Water a level of stake and character maturity that the Marvel Cinematic Universe lacked.
“15 years later, Zoey and Sam are now playing parents,” Cameron said. “In the first film, the character of Sam jumps off his flying creature and drastically changes the course of history because of this crazy, almost suicidal leap of faith. soften her fall. But when you’re a parent, you don’t think so. So for me, as a parent of five, I’m thinking, “What happens when these characters grow up and realize that they are responsible for transcending their own existence?”
Cameron continued: “When I look at these exciting blockbusters – and I look at you Marvel and DC – no matter how old the characters are, they all act like they’re in college. They have a relationship, but they don’t really. They never hung on spurs because of the kids. What really grounded us and gave us strength, love and purpose? These characters didn’t go through with it and I don’t think that’s the way to make a movie.”
