James Cameron is not shy about expressing his opinion, even if it can be a little brash. But after starring in one of the most commercially successful films of all time, Cameron is justifiably a little smug. A recent video interview with ComicBook.com (via Variety) is revealing and focused as the director couldn’t resist comparing the visuals of his new movie Avatar: The Path of Water to the Marvel films. Not surprisingly, Cameron believes that his films use motion capture far better than any other technology.

“Obviously the big comic book movies have been driving the industry,” Cameron said in an interview after being asked if he was inspired by Marvel’s visuals while making his new movie. “The growth of technology brings everyone together. It gives you better artists, more tools, plugins and code [to use]. You have more talented people writing code. We’re at WETA Digital. The team keeps bringing in new people and they all come out of this talent pool. So it improves everything.”
But then Cameron couldn’t resist showing off the advanced digital effects in The Way of the Water. “So the so-called WETA Effects are the best right now,” the director continued. “Right? Industrial Light & Magic did a great job, but when it comes to the facial expressions we do… Thanos? Come on. Give me a break. Not even close. That’s what WETA does.” It’s fair to say that Thanos has been working on motion capture for several years now, and has been in the booming industry for a long time, but Cameron made his point. He strives to ensure that his films use state-of-the-art digital visuals, and to his knowledge, the proof of this is in the pudding. Watch “Avatar: The Path of Water” and find out.
In recent interviews, Cameron hasn’t been shy about criticizing Marvel films. He even stated in an interview with ComicBook.com, “I just want to state that I’m not going to belittle Marvel or the DC Universe.” In October, the director was highly critical of Marvel in an interview with The New York Times. This time, he contrasts the narrative stakes and maturity of the characters in The Way of Water with those of the MCU.
“15 years later, Zoey and Sam are now playing parents,” Cameron said of his upcoming film. “In the first film, the character of Sam jumps off his flying creature and drastically changes the course of history because of this crazy, almost suicidal leap of faith. soften her fall. But when you’re a parent, you don’t think so. So for me, as a parent of five, I’m thinking, “What happens when these characters grow up and realize that they are responsible for transcending their own existence?”
Then there’s Marvel’s digs. “When I look at these exciting blockbusters — and I look at you Marvel and DC — no matter how old the characters are, they act like they’re in college,” Cameron continued, “and they’re connected. , But actually it is not. They never challenged the Spurs because of the kids. What really grounded us and gave us strength, love and purpose? These characters didn’t go through with it, and I don’t think that’s the way to make a movie.”
In other words, Cameron sees his Avatar films as mega-blockbusters with the pulse and soul that the MCU lacks. Next week, viewers will see if Avatar: The Way of Water lives up to the director’s comments. The film opens on December 16 everywhere.
